Lumber Calculators

Quick, no-sign-up tools to estimate your material. Convert board feet, turn square footage into lineal feet, and add a waste allowance — then request a quote for exact pricing.

These are the same conversions our crew uses every day. They give you a solid working estimate — for an exact, project-specific count, try the Project Builder or call us at (828) 654-9224.

Board Foot Calculator

A board foot (BF) is a volume measure equal to a 1″-thick board, 12″ wide, 12″ long. Enter the dimensions of a single board to get its board footage.

Board Feet = (Thickness in × Width in × Length ft) ÷ 12

Square Feet → Lineal Feet

Know the square footage of a deck, floor, or wall? Convert it to the lineal feet (LF) of board you need, using the board’s exposed face width. Most of our finish lumber and decking is priced per LF.

Lineal Feet = (Square Feet × 12) ÷ Face Width in

Waste Allowance Calculator

Every project needs a little extra for cuts, trimming, and culls. Enter your base quantity and a waste factor to get the amount to actually order. We typically recommend 10% for decking, flooring, and siding, and a bit more for diagonal or herringbone layouts.

Lumber Calculator FAQ

What is a board foot?

A board foot is a unit of volume equal to a board 1 inch thick, 12 inches wide, and 12 inches long (144 cubic inches). It is the standard way rough and hardwood lumber is measured. The formula is (thickness in × width in × length ft) ÷ 12.

What is the difference between lineal feet and board feet?

Lineal feet measure length only — one foot of board regardless of its width or thickness. Board feet measure volume. We price most finish lumber and decking per lineal foot because it is the most intuitive way to figure how much material a project needs.

How much waste should I add to a lumber order?

For most decking, flooring, and siding projects we recommend a 10% waste allowance for cuts, trim, and the occasional cull board. Add 15–20% for diagonal, herringbone, or complex layouts where off-cuts are larger.

These numbers are an estimate — how do I get an exact count?
