Heavy timbers anchor a structure visually and structurally. From exposed post-and-beam frames to decorative pergola rafters, we supply timbers in species chosen for strength, durability, and appearance.
Douglas Fir Timbers
Douglas Fir is the premier domestic timber species for structural applications. It carries some of the highest bending strength and stiffness values of any North American softwood, making it the default choice for post-and-beam construction and heavy timber framing. The heartwood is a warm pinkish-tan with tight, straight grain that takes clear finishes beautifully.
We stock Douglas Fir timbers in standard sizes from 4x4 through 8x8 in lengths up to 24 feet. Larger sections (10x10, 12x12) and longer lengths are available on a special-order basis with lead times of 2–3 weeks. Timbers are available rough-sawn, S4S (surfaced four sides), or with a hand-hewn texture for rustic aesthetics.
Cedar & Cypress Exterior Timbers
Western Red Cedar and Bald Cypress are the go-to choices for exterior timber applications where the wood will be exposed to weather. Both species contain natural oils and extractives that resist rot, decay, and insect damage without chemical pressure treatment.
Cedar timbers are lightweight (approximately 23 lb/ft³) and dimensionally stable, making them ideal for pergola posts, arbor beams, and decorative structural elements. Cypress offers a similar rot-resistance profile with a slightly harder surface and tighter grain. We carry cedar and cypress timbers in 4x4, 4x6, 6x6, and 6x8 in lengths to 20 feet.
Structural Ipe Timbers
For the ultimate in exterior durability, Ipe timbers deliver a combination of density, hardness, and rot resistance that no other commercially available species can match. Ipe's bending strength (MOR) exceeds 25,000 psi—more than double that of Douglas Fir—and its density of approximately 69 lb/ft³ makes it essentially impervious to biological degradation.
Ipe timbers are used for dock pilings, boardwalk joists, commercial pergolas, and any application where the structure must endure decades of ground contact, saltwater exposure, or heavy traffic. Available in 4x4, 4x6, 6x6, and 6x8 with lengths to 20 feet. Because of Ipe's weight and hardness, all cuts and fastener holes must be pre-drilled, and stainless steel or silicon bronze hardware is required.
Sizing & Grading
Solid-sawn timbers are typically graded under regional softwood rules (for example NELMA or WWPA) as No. 1, No. 2, or Select Structural depending on size and species. Smaller members (4x4, 4x6) are often sold as dimensional stock. Ask us what grade and documentation are available for the sizes you need — we will confirm before you order.
