Siding & Trim

Real wood siding transforms the exterior of any structure. From traditional board-and-batten farmhouses to modern rain screen cladding, we carry the species and profiles to handle residential, commercial, and architectural siding projects.

Wood siding and trim profiles

Board & Batten

Board and batten is one of the oldest siding methods in American construction. Wide boards (typically 1x10 or 1x12) are installed vertically with narrow battens (1x4) covering the seams. Estimating ratio: one 1x12 board requires exactly one 1x4 batten (1:1). We commonly supply it in Eastern White Pine, Western Red Cedar, and Cypress. For exterior Board & Batten, we recommend S1S2E (Surfaced 1 Side, 2 Edges) material — the rough-sawn back face holds stains and paints significantly better than a smooth planed surface, extending the lifespan of the finish. Board and batten creates strong vertical lines and pairs naturally with both rustic and contemporary architecture.

Nickel Gap

Nickel Gap incorporates an engineered rabbet that intentionally stops short of closing, leaving a precise 1/16"–1/8" gap (roughly the thickness of a nickel) between the boards. This creates a sharp, defined dark shadow line — the hallmark of contemporary farmhouse and coastal design. If you want the modern, highly defined shadow-line aesthetic, Nickel Gap is the correct profile. Available in 1x6 (5.0" exposed face) and 1x8 (6.75" exposed face) in pine, cedar, cypress, and poplar.

True Shiplap

True Shiplap is mechanically distinct from Nickel Gap. Historically utilized as a practical draft-seal for barns and sheds, Shiplap is milled with a simple dado cut designed to seat completely flush with zero intentional gap. The boards overlap to seal out wind and weather. Any resulting gaps will only occur accidentally due to natural, uneven wood shrinkage over time. If you order Shiplap expecting the defined shadow-line look of Nickel Gap, the boards will seat flush and the intended aesthetic will not be achieved. Available in 1x6 and 1x8 widths.

Tongue & Groove V-Joint

V-joint T&G siding mills a small chamfer on each board edge, creating a crisp "V" at every joint line. This is the classic profile for cottage-style exteriors, porch ceilings, and gable-end accents. Standard dimensions are 1x6 (5" exposed face) with lengths from 8' to 16'. Species options include Southern Yellow Pine, Eastern White Pine, and Western Red Cedar.

Rustic & Log Profiles

For cabins, lodges, and mountain homes, we carry D-log siding and channel rustic profiles. D-log siding mills a half-round face that mimics full-log construction at a fraction of the cost and weight. Channel rustic (also called reverse board-and-batten or drop siding) creates a deep shadow channel between each board. Both profiles are available in 1x6, 1x8, and 1x10 in cedar and pine. Important: Channel Rustic's rabbeted overlap significantly reduces the exposed face — a nominal 1x8 yields approximately 5.0"–6.25" of visible face (not 7.25"). Always calculate material quantities using the exposed face width.

Hardwood Rain Screen

Rain screen cladding uses a ventilated cavity behind the siding to manage moisture and improve thermal performance. We supply hardwood rain screen boards in Ipe, Cumaru, and Garapa—the same tropical species used in our decking program. These boards are typically milled in 1x4 and 1x6 square-edge profiles with clip-attachment grooves on the back face. Tropical rain screen cladding is virtually maintenance-free and carries the same 40+ year lifespan as tropical decking.

Exterior Trim

Every siding installation needs clean, durable trim for corners, windows, fascia, and soffits. We stock S4S trim in 1x and 5/4 thickness in cedar, cypress, and primed pine. For tropical projects, Ipe and Garapa trim boards are available to match your cladding species. Custom trim profiles—including drip caps, water tables, and crown molding—can be milled to order.

Volumetric Estimating Guide

The most common siding estimation error is calculating material quantities using the nominal board width. Overlap siding, Channel Rustic, and Bevel profiles all have significantly less exposed face than their nominal dimension suggests. Always divide your total square footage by the exposed face width, not the nominal width, then add a mandatory 10% waste factor.
