Ceilings & Paneling

Wood ceilings and wall paneling add warmth, texture, and architectural character that drywall alone cannot achieve. Whether you're lining a vaulted ceiling, creating an accent wall, or wrapping an entire room in real wood, we carry the profiles and species to suit any interior design.

Tongue and groove ceiling paneling

V-Joint Tongue & Groove

V-joint is the most traditional paneling profile. A small chamfer on each edge creates a clean "V" line at every joint, giving walls and ceilings a classic cottage or farmhouse feel. This profile works equally well on ceilings, full-height wall applications, and wainscoting below a chair rail. We stock V-joint T&G in 1x6 (5" exposed face) in Eastern White Pine, Western Red Cedar, and Poplar. Pine takes paint and stain beautifully; cedar adds a natural aromatic warmth; poplar provides a tight, paintable grain for contemporary interiors.

Nickel Gap & Shiplap

Nickel gap paneling leaves a narrow 1/16" gap between boards, creating a uniform shadow line without the pronounced V of traditional tongue-and-groove. It's the go-to profile for modern farmhouse and transitional interiors. Shiplap seats flush with a minimal reveal and works well for clean, painted accent walls. Both profiles are available in 1x6 and 1x8 widths. Species include pine, poplar, and cedar. For specialty applications, we can mill nickel gap in white oak, walnut, or hickory on a custom-order basis.

Edge & Center Bead

Beadboard paneling uses a small rounded bead routed into the face of each board. Edge bead places the bead only at the tongue-side joint line, creating one bead per board width. Center bead adds a second bead down the middle of the board, doubling the visual rhythm and mimicking a narrower board pattern. Both styles are traditional for wainscoting, bathroom ceilings, porch ceilings, and built-in cabinetry details.

We stock beadboard in 1x4 and 1x6 in Eastern White Pine. Custom bead profiles in cedar, cypress, or hardwoods are available through our millwork program.

Installation Notes

Interior paneling is typically installed with a pneumatic finish nailer (15- or 18-gauge) over furring strips or directly to studs. For ceiling applications, boards should be face-nailed or blind-nailed through the tongue depending on species hardness. We recommend acclimating all interior wood products in the installation space for at least 72 hours before installation to allow the moisture content to equalize with the environment. This prevents gaps and buckling after the boards are in place.

Finishing

Pine and poplar paneling can be left natural, stained, painted, or whitewashed. Cedar is often left unfinished to show its natural grain and provide subtle fragrance. For high-traffic areas or humid environments like bathrooms, apply a water-based polyurethane or penetrating oil to protect the wood surface.
