Decking Profiles

Decking profiles are engineered for outdoor foot traffic, structural performance, and fastener compatibility. The profile you choose determines how the boards are attached, how the surface feels underfoot, and how the finished deck looks.

Tropical hardwoods are what we recommend for decking. Ipe, Cumaru, and Garapa deliver unmatched durability, natural rot resistance, and a decades-long lifespan. We stock these species in pre-grooved and square-edge profiles and position them for virtually every exterior deck project. Explore our tropical species or Ipe, Cumaru, and Garapa.

Pre-Grooved Decking

Pre-grooved decking boards have two shallow slots (approximately 1/8" wide by 3/16" deep) milled into each edge of the board. These grooves accept hidden clip fasteners that lock into the slot and screw down into the joist, holding the board in place without any visible fasteners on the deck surface.

Hidden fastener systems create a clean, screw-free surface and automatically space boards with a consistent 3/16" gap for drainage and airflow. This is the preferred installation method for Ipe, Cumaru, and Garapa decking because it eliminates face-screwing through extremely hard wood—reducing the risk of splitting and dramatically speeding up installation.

Pre-grooved boards are typically supplied in 1x6 (3/4" x 5-1/2") and 5/4x6 (1" x 5-1/2") dimensions. The grooves are milled on both edges so the board can be installed with either side up. Eased (rounded) edges on the face provide a comfortable, splinter-free walking surface.

We supply the premium 175-count Complete Kit, engineered to cover exactly 100 square feet of decking (16" o.c. joist spacing). Our standard kits feature the optimal 5/32-inch gap clip in a specialized brown finish, designed to disappear seamlessly into the shadow lines of tropical hardwoods. Stainless steel screws are included with each kit.

Standard Solid E4E / S4S (Square Edge)

Standard E4E/S4S decking is a square-edge board with all four long edges rounded to a slight radius. There are no grooves — boards are face-screwed directly into the joists. This is the traditional installation method and remains popular for projects where budget is a priority or where the installer prefers face-screw attachment. S4S boards are also required for stair treads, perimeter boards, and any area where hidden clips cannot be used.

E4E decking requires pre-drilling in tropical hardwoods to prevent splitting. We recommend #7 x 2-1/4" trim-head stainless steel screws (350-count box covers 100 sq. ft.). For pre-drilling, choose a #7 Smart-Bit for flush screw heads or a #8 Smart-Bit to countersink below the surface (useful if heavy sanding is anticipated). 1 Smart-Bit per 100 sq. ft. (1 per box of screws) — the density of tropical hardwood dulls carbide tips rapidly.

For a plug-filled finish, use the Pro Plug System with 5/16-inch plugs and tool. 1 Pro Plug tool per 100 sq. ft.

Available in 1x6 (5.5" exposed face), 1x4 (3.5" exposed face), and 5/4x6 (5.5" exposed face). E4E/S4S boards are essential for stair treads, bench seats, and railing cap stock where a flat, smooth surface is needed.

Porch Flooring T&G

Porch flooring tongue-and-groove is a specialized profile designed for covered porches, screened-in porches, and other protected outdoor spaces. Unlike open-air decking (which requires gaps between boards for drainage), porch flooring T&G creates a tight, seamless floor surface that keeps insects and debris from falling through.

The tongue-and-groove joint is milled at the center of the board edge, similar to interior flooring match. Boards are blind-nailed through the tongue for a fastener-free surface. The underside of porch flooring boards is typically left rough or given a shallow kerf (relief cut) to reduce cupping in humid environments.

Porch flooring is most commonly supplied in Southern Yellow Pine (1x4 T&G with a 3" exposed face) and Douglas Fir (1x4 CVG vertical grain). For premium covered porches, we can supply porch flooring in Ipe and Cumaru, though these species require face-nailing with stainless steel nails due to their density.

Stair Construction

All stair components must use S4S (square edge) boards — hidden clips cannot be used on stair treads.
