Timberline Lumber specializes in premium tropical hardwoods sourced from responsibly managed forests. Our three flagship species — Ipe, Cumaru, and Garapa — are the gold standard for exterior decking, siding, and structural applications where longevity and natural beauty are non-negotiable.
Premium Grade
All of our tropical hardwood decking and siding is Premium Grade — each board is free of sapwood, knots, and defects. This grading standard ensures consistent color, maximum density, and the highest possible natural durability. Our tropical lumber comes from the heartwood of mature trees, where the natural oils and extractives that resist rot and insects are most concentrated.
Our Tropical Species
Why Choose Tropical Hardwoods?
- Class 1 Durability: All three species carry a Class 1 durability rating, meaning they naturally resist rot, decay, and insect damage for 40+ years without chemical treatment.
- Fire Resistance: Ipe and Cumaru carry Class A fire ratings (ASTM E84), making them approved for WUI (Wildland-Urban Interface) zones in many jurisdictions. Garapa carries a Class A/B rating depending on localized testing methodology and specific board density — verify with your local building authority for WUI compliance.
- Density: These woods are so dense they will not splinter or dent under normal use. Ipe is literally harder than concrete.
- Low Maintenance: Left untreated, tropical hardwoods weather to an elegant silver-gray patina. Apply UV oil annually to maintain the original rich tones.
Installation Notes
Tropical hardwoods require carbide-tipped saw blades and pre-drilling for all fasteners. We carry a full line of installation essentials:

- Pro Plug System: 5/16" Pro Plug tool — 1 per 100 sq. ft. Do not mix with 3/8" starter plugs from clip kits.
- Smart-Bit Pre-Drill: #7 (flush) or #8 (countersunk) — 1 per 100 sq. ft. (1 per box of screws).
- Face Screws: #7 x 2-1/4" trim-head stainless — 350-count box per 100 sq. ft.
