Arkansas Yellow Pine

Arkansas Yellow Pine is our premium answer to commodity yellow pine. We source it from a specialized Arkansas mill because the growing conditions produce a noticeably better board: tougher, rockier soils slow the tree down, tighten the growth rings, and create a heavier, denser core than fast-grown plantation pine from the sandy Deep South.

The result is flooring and finish lumber with bold cathedral grain, warm amber color, and the stable, old-school feel people associate with classic Heart Pine. It is still pine, but it is not commodity pine. It is the material we reach for when the customer wants a floor with character, weight, and long-term durability.

Our Stocking Program: We stock Arkansas Yellow Pine at our Black Mountain warehouse so flooring, S4S boards, and common profiles are available without waiting on a special-order truck.

Why Arkansas Yellow Pine?

AYP heartwood is a rich yellowish-amber to warm orange-brown, with pronounced growth rings that create the dramatic cathedral grain the species is known for. The contrast between early and late wood within each growth ring gives the floor visual depth that lighter, faster-grown pine simply cannot match.

Over time, AYP darkens to a deep amber-gold. That aging process is why new Arkansas Yellow Pine can deliver the look customers love in old Heart Pine floors without needing reclaimed material from antique structures.

Flooring First

Most Arkansas Yellow Pine customers are shopping for tongue-and-groove flooring. We keep that choice focused around two stocked widths: 1x4 for a traditional narrow-strip floor and 1x6 for a wider face with fewer board lines.

Grades & Profiles

We stock and source AYP in flooring, S4S boards, and tongue-and-groove profiles. S4S boards are useful for trim, stair components, shelving, and other finish details where the same warm pine character is wanted outside the floor.

  • C&Better: Cleaner faces with fewer defects for a more refined floor or finish board.
  • #2 character grade: More knots and variation for a rustic floor with full pine character.
  • T&G flooring: Blind-nailed tongue-and-groove flooring profile in 1x4 and 1x6.
  • S4S boards: Surfaced four sides for trim, millwork, and matching finish details.

Relief Cut Milling

Premium AYP flooring and paneling can include a relief cut, a shallow longitudinal kerf milled into the back of the board. This hidden feature releases natural tension in the wood and helps reduce cupping through seasonal humidity swings.
