Red Oak is the most widely installed hardwood flooring species in American history. For decades, it was the default choice for residential flooring — and with good reason. Red Oak offers excellent hardness, a warm pinkish-tan color, prominent grain patterns, and reliable availability at an accessible price point. It remains the essential species for renovation matching and traditional American interiors.
Color & Appearance
Red Oak heartwood is a light to medium pinkish-brown, distinctly warmer in tone than White Oak. The grain is bold and open, with dramatic cathedral patterns in flat-sawn boards and distinctive ray flecks in quarter-sawn cuts. The pinkish undertone is Red Oak's signature — it gives installed floors a warm, inviting glow that pairs beautifully with traditional furnishings, warm paint colors, and classic American interiors.
Long-Length Strip Flooring
Our Red Oak flooring is supplied in long-length random strips — the same premium format as our White Oak flooring. Typical bundles contain boards averaging 4'–8' with some running 10' or longer, giving you a floor with fewer end joints and a more refined, custom-grade appearance compared to commodity boxed flooring.
- 3/4" x 2-1/4" Strip: The most popular width for Red Oak — matches existing Red Oak floors in most pre-2000 homes for seamless renovation work.
- 3/4" x 3-1/4" Strip: Wider plank for a slightly more contemporary look while maintaining the traditional Red Oak character.
Renovation & Matching
Red Oak's greatest market advantage today is renovation matching. Millions of American homes built between 1950 and 2000 have Red Oak hardwood floors. When those homeowners renovate, add on, or repair damaged sections, they need Red Oak that matches their existing floors in species, width, and grade. Our long-length strip flooring in standard widths is specifically designed to integrate seamlessly with existing Red Oak installations.
For best results when matching existing floors:
- Match the width exactly (2-1/4" for most existing floors)
- Order the same grade as the existing floor (#1 Common matches most builder-grade installations)
- Sand and finish both old and new sections together for uniform color
