Cypress

Cypress is one of the few domestic softwoods with genuine natural rot resistance — a characteristic that has made it the premier porch ceiling, soffit, and exterior trim species across the American South for over two centuries. The heartwood contains cypressene, a natural preservative oil that resists decay, insect damage, and fungal growth without any chemical treatment.

Color & Appearance

Cypress heartwood ranges from light honey-gold to warm tan, occasionally with reddish or olive undertones. The grain is straight to slightly interlocked, with a medium texture that takes finishes smoothly. "Pecky" or "sinker" cypress — reclaimed from river bottoms or old-growth timber with natural pocket holes — is highly sought after for rustic accent walls and feature installations, though we primarily stock clear, new-growth material.

Natural Rot Resistance

Cypress heartwood carries a Class 2 durability rating — naturally resistant to decay and termites. While not as dense as tropical hardwoods, Cypress outperforms every other domestic softwood in wet or exterior-exposed environments. This makes it the go-to species for:

  • Covered porch ceilings and soffits
  • Exterior window and door trim
  • Pergola and arbor beams
  • Boat docks and waterfront structures
  • Bathroom and wet-area ceilings

Available Profiles

  • V-Joint Tongue & Groove: The classic porch ceiling profile. V-groove joint creates clean shadow lines that highlight the warm Cypress color. Available in 1x4 and 1x6.
  • Nickel Gap Tongue & Groove: Modern reveal profile with a crisp narrow gap at each joint. Increasingly popular for contemporary porch ceilings and interior feature walls. 1x6 and 1x8.
  • B&B (Board & Batten): Wide boards with narrow battens for exterior siding and interior accent walls. B&B in Cypress delivers a timeless farmhouse aesthetic with built-in weather resistance.

Porch Ceiling Applications

Cypress is, hands down, the most popular species for porch ceilings in the Southeast. A covered porch ceiling is technically an exterior application — it's exposed to humidity, temperature swings, and occasional moisture from wind-driven rain. Cypress handles these conditions without warping, cupping, or rotting, while Pine or Spruce in the same application would eventually show signs of moisture damage.

The traditional "haint blue" painted porch ceiling is a Cypress classic, but modern builders increasingly leave Cypress ceilings natural or clear-coated to showcase the warm wood tones.

Relief Cut Milling

Premium Cypress paneling features a relief cut — a shallow longitudinal kerf milled into the back (unexposed) face of each board. This hidden milling feature releases natural tension in the wood and prevents boards from cupping during the severe seasonal humidity shifts that porch ceilings and exterior soffits are routinely exposed to.
