Estimate Mountain Decking Guide

How to turn deck square footage into lineal feet, add waste for mountain builds, and get a mill-direct quote from Black Mountain.

Mountain decks waste material on stairs, picture-frame borders, and cuts around rock outcrops. Under-ordering stalls the crew; over-ordering ties up cash. A simple takeoff plus a realistic waste factor gets you a quote that matches the jobsite.

Timberline Lumber Company helps builders estimate mountain decking in lineal feet from square footage using exposed face widths, then quotes Ipe, Cumaru, or Garapa mill-direct from Black Mountain with flatbed delivery across Western NC, Upstate SC, and East Tennessee.

Square feet to lineal feet

For decking priced and sold by the lineal foot, convert area using exposed face width (not always the nominal width):

LF ≈ (SQFT × 12) / Face_Width_inches

  • 1x4 flooring / decking T&G — 3.0" exposed face.
  • 1x6 T&G / pre-grooved — 5.0" exposed face.
  • 1x8 T&G or nickel gap — 6.75" exposed face.
  • 1x6 S4S open decking — often ~5.5" face when sold as square-edge (confirm profile on the quote).

Use our free lumber calculators or the Project Builder to size a materials list before you request pricing.

Waste factor for mountain builds

We default to about 10% waste for flooring, siding, and outdoor decking unless board lengths perfectly match the run. Add more for complex stairs, heavy picture-framing, or irregular footprints common on hillside lots in Boone, Cashiers, and Smokies cabin country.

Species and fasteners

Pick species for climate first — see the WNC climate guide and Asheville climate decking pages — then size hidden clips or face screws from the fastener guide (roughly one clip or screw box per 100 sq ft as a starting point).

Mountain Decking Estimate FAQ

How do I convert deck square feet to lineal feet?

Use LF ≈ (SQFT × 12) / exposed face width in inches. A 5.5-inch face 1x6 needs fewer lineal feet than a 3.5-inch 1x4 for the same area.

What waste factor should I use on a mountain deck?

Start at about 10% for standard rectangles. Add more for stairs, picture frames, and irregular hillside footprints common in High Country and plateau builds.

Can Timberline estimate from a rough sketch?

Yes. Send overall dimensions, preferred profile, and species. We will convert to LF, suggest waste, and quote Ipe, Cumaru, or Garapa with fasteners.

Where do I build a materials list online?

Use Project Builder for a guided list, or the lumber calculators for quick SQFT-to-LF math, then request a quote from Black Mountain.
